What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a natural healing modality that uses extreme dilutions of substances from nature to stimulate a healing response. It’s based on the Law of Similars (also called Like Cures Like) which states that if a substance can cause symptoms in a healthy person in its crude form, then it can stimulate self-healing of similar symptoms in a sick person when prepared homeopathically.

For example, since onion in its crude form causes watery eyes and a runny nose, when prepared homeopathically it can be used to stimulate self-healing in an individual suffering from the same characteristic allergy symptoms (e.g. watery eyes and runny nose.)

Homeopathic remedies are prepared commercially by homeopathic pharmaceutical companies according to strict FDA guidelines. The preparation process includes repeated dilution and succussion (shaking) of the original substance in a lactose or alcohol base.

The original substance can be a plant (e.g. Belladonna), a mineral (e.g. Silica), or an animal derived substance (e.g. Dog’s Milk).

Homeopathic remedies are extremely safe. Because they work on an energetic level, they either create a resonance response in the individual taking the remedy or they don’t. When there is a resonance response (i.e. the symptom pictures match), they stimulate a healing response. When there is no resonance response (i.e. the symptom pictures don’t match), there is neither a positive nor a negative response.

How does Homeopathy Work?

Although often confused with herbal and nutritional medicine, homeopathy is distinctly different. Herbal and nutritional medicine are primarily physical forms of medicines, whereas homeopathy is an energetic form of medicine. Like other forms of energy medicine (e.g. acupuncture and reiki) homeopathy helps dissipate blockages in an individual’s subtle energy that may be preventing the individual’s body wisdom from healing the illness. When the blockages are released, the individual’s body wisdom is freed up to do what it needs to do – restructure, reorganize, release, reconstruct, realign, etc.

This innate body intelligence is what brings about the healing that results from energetic healing modalities. Some people compare this process to pushing a boulder over a cliff. It only takes one big shove in just the right place and then gravity takes over. Likewise, an individual may need only one homeopathic remedy to stimulate a deep and long lasting healing response.

For acute illnesses (e.g. cold, flu or sports injury), usually only one blockage is involved and so usually only one remedy is required. For most people with chronic illness, however, there are usually multiple blockages – in which case they often need a series of remedies over a period of time. Each remedy helps release a pattern of blockage, and assists the body wisdom in healing the chronic illness layer by layer. It is similar to peeling the layers off an onion.

Once a homeopathic remedy stimulates a healing response, there may be a release of thoughts or emotions that the individual has suppressed in the past. This may come in the form of dreams, mood changes, memories of the past, or even just a heightened awareness of thoughts and emotions. As with other forms of energetic healing, this type of emotional release is typically followed by an innate restructuring process in which the body wisdom resolves chronic symptoms.

What Kind of Illness does Homeopathy treat?

Instead of treating specific diseases, Homeopathy treats the whole person.

All of the person’s symptoms, whether physical, mental, or emotional represent a state of imbalance very specific to that individual. The goal of the homeopath is to recognize the unique pattern of symptoms and to identify the remedy that most closely matches that specific pattern. A homeopathic remedy tends to give a patient more freedom of movement in the area of their life where they feel “stuck”. This feeling of stuckness can be either an emotional, mental, spiritual or physical state. For example, a remedy could help with not being able to speak up, not having the confidence to do something, or a having painful knee that makes walking difficult.

It can often cure many of the various ailments which people take for granted or have been told to put up with, such as hay fever, asthma, constipation, migraine, eczema, menstrual and menopausal problems, chronic exhaustion, etc. It is particularly useful in conditions for which conventional medicine either has nothing to offer or offers only palliative approaches of ‘symptom control’ or ‘disease management’, such as allergic complaints, arthritis and digestive problems.

What to Expect During a Visit to a Homeopath?

The thorough initial interview requires approximately two hours. You will be asked to describe all of your problems in detail as well as to give a complete description of everything that characterizes you and influences your health. We will explore all aspects of your life including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. I will be searching for patterns of disharmony and how they are affecting your life.

After the visit I will study your case to find the remedy that most closely matches. I may suggest a remedy for an acute problem during the visit or it could take up to a week or two to find a match for a chronic problem.

You will be asked to schedule a follow-up visit between 2 to 4 weeks after taking the remedy to see how you are doing.

What to Expect After Taking a Remedy?

Homeopathic medicines are designed to stimulate your body’s natural ability to heal itself – to act as a catalyst for healing. A homeopathic remedy doesn’t cure as such; it works rather like throwing a pebble into a pond. The homeopath’s job is to throw that pebble into the middle of “your” pond so that it sends out healing ripples to every part of you.

The process of healing varies from person to person, depending on how ill you are, your levels of vitality, and of course, the accuracy of the homeopathic prescription itself. In the days/weeks after taking the homeopathic remedy you may find that you feel better in yourself – you experience an increase in energy and/or your complaints gradually begin to improve or even clear.

With an acute or recent illness your improvement may be quite swift. If you have been suffering from a long term or chronic illness, it can be a more gradual or prolonged process. In general, the longer you have been ill the longer that process takes.

Some people experience a slight worsening or aggravation after their treatment. This usually occurs within the first two weeks of starting a remedy and is a good sign. Aggravations mostly do not last long, are manageable and are usually accompanied by an increased sense of well being.

You may experience a “return of old symptoms”, in other words symptoms that you experienced in the past may return, and these too, are a good sign. They indicate that your body is clearing out an old disease pattern and are generally short-lived. If you fall ill after your consultation ask yourself whether your symptoms are familiar, whether they remind you of something you have experienced in the past.

If they don’t, it may be that you have contracted an acute illness, i.e. a cold or flu, or urinary tract infection – something that has occurred as a result of some additional stress in your life. If your symptoms are serious you will need to consult your doctor (or even the emergency room if they are very serious). It may be possible to treat your complaint homeopathically so it is worth calling me to check this out – the earlier the better. In any case, it is always helpful to let me know if you are considering medical treatment for an acute complaint in between consultations.

You may find as you progress that adjustments to eating habits, lifestyle habits, sleeping patterns, living and/or working environments, relationships, and other areas of your life become necessary to promote sound health and a good long-term response to homeopathic remedies and your personal well-being. Many patients, as they become more informed and more aware of their health and how they are impacted, begin to make healthier choices for themselves and their families with the ultimate goal being that of achieving a balanced quality of life – it’s a natural outcome of beginning to feel better!

History and Politics

Homeopathy has a long and distinguished history in the United States, and was popular from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. Dr. Constantine Hering, a student of German physician Samuel Hahnemann, and father of homeopathy in the United States established the first homeopathic medical school in the U.S. in 1835 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. By 1844, there were so many physicians claiming to be homeopathic practitioners that the homeopathic medical profession formed the American Institute of Homeopathy, the first national medical association in the United States. The American Medical Association (AMA) was formed three years later and denounced homeopathy as a delusion. AMA members were forbidden to associate with homeopathic physicians either professionally or socially, and physicians practicing homeopathy were expelled or blocked from becoming members.

Still, homeopathy continued to gain attention in America due in part to its great success in treating acute and epidemic diseases, notably cholera and yellow fever. During an 1849 cholera epidemic in Cincinnati, Ohio, only 3 percent of those patients treated homeopathically died, as compared to the 40 to 70 percent death rate among those treated with conventional medicine.

In the 1879 epidemic of yellow fever, homeopaths in New Orleans treated 1,945 cases with a mortality rate of 5.6 percent, while the mortality rate with standard medical treatment was 16 percent. At this time some of homeopathy’s more illustrious supporters included John D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, and Mark Twain.

By 1900, there were twenty-two homeopathic medical schools and nearly one hundred homeopathic hospitals in the United States. In fact, 15 percent of all American physicians practiced homeopathy at the turn of the century, according to Trevor Cook, Ph.D., DI Hom., President of the British Homeopathic Medical Society. However, by the same time, the bond between the AMA and the pharmaceutical companies was firmly established. Paid advertisements from pharmaceutical companies in the AMA journal were the AMA’s main source of revenue (as it is today), prominent physicians were paid to endorse proprietary drugs, and doctors were deluged with free samples of pharmaceutical drugs. Through a series of maneuvers including a new rating system for medical schools aimed at eliminating homeopathic colleges, the practice of homeopathy had nearly disappeared as a force in American medicine by 1930.

However, homeopathy is again becoming recognized as a viable alternative medicine, and statistics now show that the American public is returning to the form of treatment in dramatic numbers, with many famous people choosing homeopathy as their preferred treatment.

“There have been two great revelations in my life;
the first was bebop, the second was homeopathy”.
– Dizzy Gillespie

Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of cases than any other method of treatment. Homeopathy is the latest and refined method of treating patients economically and non-violently.
– Mahatma Gandhi

Homeopathy is wholly capable of satisfying the therapeutic demands of this age better than any other system or school of medicine.
– Charles F. Menninger, M.D., founder of the Menninger Clinic (a psychiatric clinic)

Mother Teresa was a big proponent of homeopathy because of its effectiveness and low cost. There are currently four charitable homeopathic dispensories are run under the guidance of the Mother’s Missionaries of Charity.

Other famous people who are or were advocates of homeopathy include: Abraham Lincoln, Bill Clinton, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Warren G Harding, William McKinley, Toni Blair, The Royal Family, Charles Darwin, David Beckham, Bethovan, Chopan, Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, Van Gogh, Renoir, Tina Turner, Cher, Annie Lennox, Axl Rose, Louisa may Alcott, George Harrison, Priscilla Presley, Ashley Judd, Robin McGraw, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Emanuel Swedenborg, Mary Baker Eddy, William Wrigley, Henry and Susan Samueli, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, Sr., and Norman Cousins.

The Future of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is sanctioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a valid and effective medicine. The official acceptance of homeopathy and its integration into the American health care system could prove to have an enormous impact on lowering the cost of national health care, due to its low cost and tremendous health benefits. Although controlled clinical studies might prove costly, homeopathy’s history of clinical success and the results of studies being carried out in Europe indicate that this is an area where the United States government should provide funds for research. Because homeopathic remedies are derived from natural substances, and as such, are not patentable, no pharmaceutical companies will provide the necessary funds for research to gain FDA approval.

The low cost of homeopathic remedies also guarantees that it would be impossible for a company to recoup its research investment. Clearly, homeopathy, like other forms of natural medicine including herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation, is caught in an economic Catch-22. But as part of the growing tide of national awareness of alternative medicine, homeopathy should soon receive the attention it deserves from the United States government and become part of the solution to America’s national health care.
